Item Description
Aragonite is chemically identical to Calcite, and the Spanish material is some of the most well-known among collectors. The species was named in 1797 for the type locality, Molina de Aragon, Spain. The Aragonites from this locality are not only iconic, but stand out as some of the most distinctive examples known for the species. The rare and alluring purple color, along with the beautiful twinned pseudo-hexagonal form make for some really attractive specimens. This piece is a 2013 discovery at La Pesquera and is essentially a wonderful prismatic twinned crystal grou) of Aragonite with wonderful purple exteriors which grade into a straw yellow coloration and the ends. The piece appears to have been cleaned with acid as it has a slightly "waxy" exterior luster which is unusual for the material. Nonetheless, the color, luster and gemminess make it very appealing for such a common species.
