Brazil has been a source of fine quality gem Aquamarines for decades. Stones of excellent size and quality are a staple from Brazil, but what makes this gem special is that it doesn't have traditional cutting. It's a completely unique, beautiful custom faceted gem with a "Pear" cut, and an enticing sky blue color, but what makes it really special is the fact that it has a "Fantasy" cut. This style of cutting is where the underside/pavilion/culet area of the gem has actually been carved to create beautiful geometric patterns, freeform designs or unique shapes that are seldom seen in any colored stones on the market today. The stone honestly reminds me of an ornate Fabergé egg, with delicate and enticing patterns that make it distinctive and special. Minor inclusions can be seen up close, but you almost don't notice them when you hold the stone in your hands. Then you throw in the fact that it weighs over 40 carats(!) and you have a superb collector's gem, not to mention a candidate as a center stone for a killer pendant. Aquamarine is also the birthstone for March, so it could make a great gift idea for anybody with a March birthday.
The gem was cut by Brett Kosnar, a 4-time AGTA Spectrum Award winning gem cutter from Colorado.
