Item Description
Erongo Aquamarine crystals hold a special place in the aquamarine world, as they are neither the gemmiest nor the most transparent but somehow have a color saturation and style that leap out at the viewer, quite different in impact than what you might feel when looking at a translucent Pakistan crystal. The color is just robust, for lack of a better word. What really makes an Erongo specimen special, however, is the nearly unique contrasts of the deep blue aquamarine to lustrous black schorl tourmaline crystals, so typical here and yet so rare for other locations. This specimen features a single, dramatic aquamarine hanging out (or shooting up, depending on perspective), balanced against a cluster of tourmaline. The tourmaline shape is typically weird, as many Erongo schorls can be. So, in this case, that works - it gives a contrast in geometry as well as color. Both minerals sit on a ghostly-white matrix of feldspar crystals for further contrast, as it makes the blue and black leap out to the eye and makes them look more 3-dimensional. This specimen probably came out in the early 2000s. It has no repairs, no restorations. Under UV light, you can see quite clearly a number of intense vivid green zones of hyalite opal, which are in association and sparkle nicely. From the large aquamarine subcollection of the Gene Meieran Collection. Valued $20,000.
