Item Description
A cool old time specimen from this locality in the Watchung Mountains of New Jersey. This piece is simply labeled Apophyllite (more properly fluorapophyllite-(K)) and features sharp, blocky, pseudo-cubic, whie crystals measuring up to 1.7 cm sittig on matrix. The most interesting aspect of the piece is the fact that it shows a selective deposition of an unknown green mineral (possibly Pumpellyite-(Mg) or something that hasn't been reported from like Celadonite or Julgoldite?). Additionally I found some tiny maroon colored crystals of what I believe to be Heulandite while looking at the piece with a loupe. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The piece comes with a typed 3x5 index card label from Wulff that states the piece was part of the personal collection of Lazard Cahn, who was also one of the founding members of the CSMS. A wonderfully historic and eye-catching specimen of this well known old time material.
