Item Description

Aphrosiderite is an obsolete name for a chlorite group member (originally described from a mine in Germany). This is a sharp aphrosiderite pseudomorph after a large almandine garnet crystal from the iron mines of Marquette County, Michigan (probably 1950s or earlier). The black with a green coating crystal has textbook dodecahedral garnet crystal habit and moderate luster. A bit of edgewear and contacting are noted, but this remains a very rare, highly representative example of this uncommon pseudomorph. Ex Mullane Collection. His older label showing Houghton County is incorrect. We have several specimens in our inventory from the Richard Hauck Collection with more accurate labeling from Marquette County (as do others ). Sharp!
