Item Description
First off, when researching this specimen, I was pleasantly surprised to find a photo of it on mindat.org which was taken 35 years ago Rock Currier when it was in Rich Kosnar's collection. See the link at http://www.mindat.org/photo-217605.html. This specimen features a doubly-terminated, lustrous, sharp, translucent, unusual green color, hexagonal crystal of Apatite-(CaF) that is aesthetically sitting atop of a cluster of GEM/gemmy, nearly colorless crystals of Calcite with underlain reddish-brown gossan matrix. Rich Kosnar's hand-painted specimen number on the back of the piece reads Ap1173 (which means it was acquired in November 1973), and the Rock Currier's photo on mindat.org was taken in 1974, just after Rich acquired the specimen. Apatite is extremely rare from the Emke mine, and this is certainly one of the best I have seen from this locality. A very cool documented specimen from the early 1970s when Onganja was producing some of it's best material.
