Item Description

Some of the finest and most well-known examples of the rare copper sulfate species Antlerite are those from the famous Chuquicamata Mine in Chile. Antlerite was named in 1889 after Antler Mine in Arizona, the type locality for the species. Fibrous examples, like this piece can often be confused with Brochantite, but the Chuquicamata specimens are iconic and fairly easy to identify. This piece features a somewhat chatoyant, horizontal seam of acicular intense green Antlerite with minor Quartz sitting atop altered porphyritic matrix. The brilliance of the crystals is best seen in strong light, as they glisten and glow when viewed up close. If you collect rarities, this is a good example of these famous specimens from this historic (and now defunct) locality. From the collection of Bill Wilson (#25.2.7.1), former president of Rhode Island Mineral Hunters club.
