Item Description
Blocky, layered small cabinet anthracite coal with submetallic luster from Pennsylvania. Anthracite is the highest ranking of coals with the highest energy density, highest carbon content, between 86% and 97%, the fewest impurities and less than 14% volatiles. This specimen is from Harrisburg, Dauphin County, to the West of the famous Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, home of the largest known anthracite coal deposits in the world (Wikipedia and MINDAT). Pennsylvania anthracite coal fueled the 19th and early 20th century Industrial Age in the United States. Ex John Whatley Collection. John was a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). He had many interests and hobbies. His favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals and he was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society.
