Annabergite

Item Description

A lovely toenail piece featuring a vug filled with intense green colored Annabergite crystals on matrix from the ancient Lavrion District in Greece. Narrow "stringers" of metallic grey Galena can be seen in a few spots on the piece. Lavrion is one of the great old world mining localities, and the UNESCO website states, "The systematic exploitation of the mineral wealth of the area began during the transitional period from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (3200 BC). In the Bronze Age, the mines of Lavrio supplied the great civilizations of the Aegean (Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean) with silver, lead and copper". This piece is best viewed under magnification, and we've photographed it with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate the quality. Classic material, iconic for the locality.
