Item Description
A choice miniature sized display specimen of Anglesite from the famed Tsumeb Mine. The piece features a pair of sharp, well-formed, blocky, tabular white crystals measuring up to 3.1 cm, free of matrix, which is associated with pale greenish colored Thometzekite (a very rare hydrated lead copper arsenate, for which Tsumeb is the type locality) along with pale yellow Vanackerite (an incredibly rare lead cadmium chloro-arsenate for which Tsumeb is also the type locality). The label states that there is Baryte on the specimen, but I can't find anything that looks like Baryte on the piece. The association of these three minerals only occurs at Tsumeb, and I can count all of the specimens I've seen on one hand in my life. This piece is not only exceptionally rare, but showy and would certainly make a great addition to any Tsumeb suite or a collection of secondary ore minerals. I can see one tiny "rub" on the termination of the main Anglesite crystal, otherwise the piece is in great condition. While the Anglesites from Tsumeb are not necessarily rare, they are not common on the market, especially in eye-catching examples like this with two notably rare associated minerals. Valued $2,500.
From the collection of Daniel ("Dan") W. Behnke (July 31, 1932 - January 20, 2020) of Glenview, Illinois (Collection #97K). Dan was an Associate Photographer of both the Mineralogical Record and Rock and Minerals magazines. He served as the Micromount chairman of the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies from 1981 to 1988. He was elected to the National Board of Directors of the Friends of Mineralogy in 1989, and the Micromounters Hall of Fame in 2007. He was a beloved member of the mineral collecting community, most notably for his supreme skill at photomicrography. If you've ever seen any of Dan's micro photos on mindat.org, it's easy to see why he was one of the best in this field.
