Item Description
Melanite is the black Titanium-bearing variety of andradite garnet. Scintillating, sharp, jet-back crystals strikingly fill a sculptural vug in the sawed serpentine matrix. The dodecahedrons reach 7 mm on this fine and classic large piece. The specimen is from the near the famous Dallas Gem Mine in the historic New Idria District of California. The District is famed for world class benitoite, neptunite, topazolite (topaz like) andradite garnets and melanite andradite garnets. Ex Chet Lemanski Collection No. 9293 and acquired in 1998 from Detrin Minerals (Daniel Trinchillo in his early years). Large, rich and excellent older material, probably from 1970s finds.
