Andradite (var: Melanite) (ex Bob Reynolds Collection)

Item Description

A cluster of fine quality, very good sized, sharp, lustrous, dark brown (virtually black) crystals of Andradite Garnet (var: Melanite) with very minor matrix. The largest crystal measures about 3.8 cm across, which is larger than most I've seen from the locality. A few crystals have minor imperfections on the display side of the piece, but it's still good quality overall and you'd be hard-pressed to find another with crystals this size, especially since nothing has made its way out of this locality in years. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
