Item Description
Scintillating, sharp, jet-black, dodecahedral, Melanite garnet crystals richly and aesthetically cover the sculptural, small cabinet, oxidized serpentine matrix. Melanite is the black Titanium-bearing variety of Andradite garnet. Crystals reach 6 mm on the diagonal. The specimen is from the near the famous Dallas Gem Mine in the historic New Idria District of California. The District is famed for world class benitoite, neptunite, topazolite (topaz like) andradite garnets and melanite andradite garnets. Ex John Whatley Collection, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022) and acquired via a swap with Roger Barnett in 1993. Classic, rich and showy material from the famous area.
