Item Description

A rarely seen Andradite Garnet specimen from the Osgood Mountains in Humboldt County, Nevada. This piece features good sized, sharp, lustrous, well-formed, textbook dodecahedral crystals of a dark brown hue sitting on a small bit of matrix. The edges of the crystals, feature slim trapezohedral modifications. A few of the crystals are contacted on the edges, and if you look closely, there is a chrome green color that can be seen inside Garnets, showing their transition in terms of color (from the introduction of iron) during growth. Overall, the piece is in good shape, but it's not damage free. It's a cool locality specimen that would make for a great addition to any worldwide Garnet suite, or a collection of minerals from either Nevada or the Western United States. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
