Item Description

Andorite is lead, silver, antimony sulfosalt and was named for the Hungarian mineral collector Andor von Semsey (1833-1923), who holds a remarkable distinction for having two mineral species named after him (andorite and semseyite). This mine at Oruro dates Spanish mining as far back as the year 1595 and was mined by Incan Indians for several centuries prior. The best examples of the species have come from Bolivia. This specimen was collected during WWII and is from the personal collection of father of Bolivian mineralogy, Federico Ahlfeld It consists of layered, steel-grey, metallic, bladed, lustrous crystals of the rare lead, silver, antimony sulfosalt Andorite sitting atop lustrous, golden pyritohedral Pyrite matrix. The Andorite crystals are in great condition overall. Better in person as it was somewhat difficult to photograph. The important aspect of this specimen is the fact that the Andorite crystals are on PYRITE matrix! Only about 5% of the Andorite specimens from this mine are on matrix, and I would say only 1% of the crystals were on Pyrite matrix. It is very difficult to find any samples of this mineral on the market today, and until very recently, the locality had not produced specimens in MANY years. A wonderful opportunity to own a superb association specimen of these rare mineral species. Valued at $700 retail.
