Item Description
Dramatically sculptural, gorgeous colors and complex crystallization on this impressive sliced and polished half of a large ammonite from Madagascar. The fossil has been cut in half to show the fantastic interior and exterior structures and colors. The stunning interior chambers are completely visible. A few are filled with colorful vari-colored calcite, some with vari-colored clays while MOST are hollow and lined with oxide-tinted drusy dogtooth calcite. The number of hollow chambers are most impressive on this piece. A portion of the exterior shows the amazingly convoluted suture patterns. The species is Cleoniceras and the fossil dates to the Late Early Cretaceous Period, about 100 million years ago. It looks like modern art! 2154 grams or 4.7 pounds mass.
