Ammonite fossil (polished)

Item Description

Gorgeous colors, dramatic sculptural form and complex crystallization on this striking sliced and polished half of a large ammonite from Madagascar. The fossil has been cut in half to show the amazing interior and exterior structures and colors. The stunning interior chambers are completely visible. Some are filled with colorful vari-colored calcite, some with vari-colored clays and some (concentrated at the end) are hollow and lined with oxide-tinted druzy dogtooth calcite. The large hollow chambers at the end are most impressive on this piece. A portion of the exterior shows the amazingly convoluted suture patterns. The species is Cleoniceras and the fossil dates to the Late Early Cretaceous Period, about 100 million years ago. 908 grams or 2.0 pounds mass. The high polished luster really adds character and color. It resembles modern art!
