Item Description
Amethyst specimens are very uncommon from this less well-known South Carolina locality - Jonesville in Union County. A complete all-around and pristine, 360-degree, transparent to translucent crystal is aesthetically set on a bed of small quartz points. The glassy and lustrous crystal has variable blush-purple and colorless hues. Scattered inclusions of red flakes were formerly listed as Lepidocrocite, a Fe-oxide with hydroxyl. MINDAT notes: "The red inclusions in many quartz crystals, often labelled by sellers as "lepidocrocite", are in fact normally hematite. We are unaware of any analytically confirmed red translucent scaly lepidocrocite as inclusions in quartz crystals". See: https://www.mindat.org/min-2379.html. Ex John Whately Collection and acquired in 1993. John was a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). He had many interests and hobbies. His favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals and he was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. You can read more about John at: https://www.thomaspoteet.com/obituaries/john-whatley. An excellent included amethyst from this obscure locale.
