Item Description
Amethyst is one of the most well-known and recognized gems/minerals in the world. Even people without any collecting experience in the gem/minerals world have heard of it. The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek terms "a-methystos" meaning "not drunken", as ancient Greeks believed that the stone would protect against intoxication. Wine goblets were often carved from it, and the gemstone still symbolizes sobriety to this day. It should be noted that the Latin name amethystus was a catch-all terms that referred to Amethyst, along with both purple Sapphire and Garnet. Traditionally, the color purple has been a symbol for royalty and Amethyst was often used for monarchs and leaders throughout history. It was, considered to be the stone of bishops, who still often wear amethyst rings. In Tibet, amethyst is considered to be sacred to Buddha and rosaries are often fashioned from it. Amethyst would be very expensive, were not for its widespread availability, as it is one of the few purple gems out there. This stone is from Brazil and has a beautiful rich "grape jelly" purple color. The color is completely natural and very difficult to find elsewhere. This stone has visible inclusions and a simple "Rectangle Cabochon" cut.
