Item Description
A wonderful piece of the classic Amethyst from the famous discovery at Hopkinton in the early 1980s. Many of these famous and significant specimens were collected by John Rakovan and the legendary Sal Avella over the years (https://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=236646&min=198). The small deposit was actually found by accident, first discovered in 1981 and worked for approximately 10 years. The discovery yielded between 500 to 600 single scepter crystals and 35 crystal groups according to Volume 26, No. 2 of the Mineralogical Record (1995). These are some of the most sought after specimens from the northeastern US, and they are no longer being found. Most specimens mined were singles off matrix, and groups or matrix specimens are exceedingly rare. This piece features very well-formed, sharp, gemmy, lustrous, purple Amethyst scepter habit crystals sitting on nearly opaque white milky Quartz matrix. The largest Amethyst crystal measures 2.0 cm long, and the largest Milky Quartz measures 4.3 cm long. Good quality, save some minor damage, but it's the fact that these pieces are seldom seen on the market now that makes its so desirable. I would value this one between $2,500-$3,500 for the size quality, and the fact that it's a very hard to find matrix display specimen. From the worldwide private collection of Brian Kosnar.
