Item Description

The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek "a-methystos" meaning "not drunken,". Wine goblets were often carved from it, and the gemstone still symbolizes sobriety to this day. Traditionally, the color purple has been a symbol for royalty and Amethyst was often used for monarchs and leaders throughout history. It was, considered to be the stone of bishops, who still often wear amethyst rings. In Tibet, amethyst is considered to be sacred to Buddha and rosaries are often fashioned from it. Amethyst would be very expensive, were not for its widespread availability, as it is one of the few purple gems out there. Material from Rwanda is fairly hard to find on the market, and it's a shame because it's some of the mostly deeply saturated material out there. This "oval" cut stone is a good sized Rwandan Amethyst with deep "grape jelly" purple color and is only slightly included. My favorie aspect of the stone is that when you view it on its side, you can see a slight red flash (this is sometimes referred to as "Siberian" Amethyst) in places. This is arguably the most desirable color seen in Amethyst, and it's very hard to find. This stone is priced at $711.75 high retail.
