Item Description

Old-time, classic, matrix small cabinet glassy and lustrous amethyst crystal cluster from this famous South Carolina locale - Due West. The sculptural piece is dramatically dominated by the large doubly terminated crystal. This crystal has a beautiful, sharp, gem termination with pretty variable purple color. The lower portion of the crystal is translucent and colorless. The attached 3.2 cm doubly terminated crystal is a fine accessory, AND the amethysts have Smoky edges, a striking complement. The large amethyst is nearly pristine, with only a bit of bruising to the lower termination. Some of the finest Eastern USA amethysts have come from Due West and this is a very aesthetic matrix example. See the 1990 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 21, No. 3. Ex John Whatley Collection and acquired from Cecil Butler in 1989. Cecil collected the piece in circa 1963. John was a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). He had many interests and hobbies. His favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals and he was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. You can read more about John at: https://www.thomaspoteet.com/obituaries/john-whatley. Very fine old Due West amethyst.
