Item Description
When people think of Amazonite from the United States, most of them will immediately conjure up images of material from the various granitic pegmatites around the Pikes Peak Batholith in Colorado. Despite the number of granitic pegmatite localities in southern California, Amazonite is rarely found, so when we acquired this specimen, it was a real surprise. Not only is this from an isolated discovery, the quality is quite good, and honestly would pass for Colorado any day. This showy small cabinet display specimen features a predominant, 4.2 cm, sharp, well-formed, euhedral crystal of saturated blue-green Amazonite associated with a few smaller accenting Amazonite crystals sitting on massive white Feldspar matrix with associated bronze colored, play crystals of Mica (possibly Zinnwaldite) and minor white Quartz. The main Amazonite crystal is in good condition on the front / display side, but it's incomplete on the back where it was contacted against the pocket wall. The piece was sawn on the bottom, so it sits beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay. If you collect pegmatite minerals, California minerals or worldwide Feldspars, do NOT miss out on this chance to get your hands on a good quality and attractive display specimen from this obscure locality in the New York Mountains of California (northeastern San Bernardino County). Valued at $1,500 in the inventory. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
