Item Description

An obscure and probably isolated specimen of Almandine from Mt Taylor (named after president Zachary Taylor), New Mexico. This peak is the high point of the San Mateo Mountains and the highest point in the Cibola National Forest. I can't find a listing for any Almandine discoveries in this area, so my guess is that this might have been found by a hiker or somebody who wasn't necessarily digging for minerals. Small, sharp, sparkling crystals of Almandine sit on Rhyolite matrix. The crystals are attractive up close, despite their smaller size. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#10237). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
