Item Description

The famous Sedalia Copper Mine lies on the northeast side of the Arkansas River Valley, about 4 miles northwest of Salida. This locality dates back to the 1880s, and is probably best known for producing some impressive large single crystals of Almandine Garnet. This piece is an impressive big single trapezohedral crystal of dark reddish-brown Almandine showing well-formed faces, though it's not totally complete all around. The piece is hefty for its size, weighing in at 875 grams (nearly 2 pounds). Perhaps the best aspect of the piece is the fact that it was self-collected by George Loud in 1958, and the LOW catalogue number of "0027" means that it was one of the very first pieces recorded into George's collection. A fantastic old-time example of this iconic material with great pedigree.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 51.4.3a.2 CO.2; 0027. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
