Item Description
This is the only Garnet specimen we've ever had to offer from this locality, it's actually the ONLY mineral specimen we've ever seen from this mine. The piece hosts a pair of sharp, well-formed, lustrous, dark reddish colored Almandine Garnet crystals showing a balanced combination of dodecahedral and trapezohedral faces measuring up to 1.2 cm across, sitting on massive Quartz matrix. A few incomplete Almandines can be seen on the piece, along with one smaller well-formed crystal on the lower edge. If you collect Garnets or minerals of North Carolina, this is a very worthwhile specimen to add to your collection for the obscure locality. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #3585L. The catalogue entry for this piece states that it's, "A former Russel Burleson specimen from the Will Shulman collection." Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
