Item Description

This is an attracitve specimen from one of the best known localities in the United States for almandine. This piece features a lovely, sharp, lustrous, very deep red color, "textbook" trapezohedron sitting in layered pastel-pink rhyolite matrix. It is virtually damage free and very eye-catching, with flashes of gemminess. A classic US garnet specimen. The almandine crystal measures 1.8 cm across. The garnet from here is almandine and not spessartine, although almost all garnets from this location have been incorrectly labeled spessartine by collectors. Repeated chemical analyses have shown these to be almandine. Ex Trimingham Collection and from the Bill Moller Collection, # 926, according to the label.
