Item Description

Most Colorado collectors are familiar with the famous old Sedalia Mine, which was a former copper-gold-silver producer, but it became synonymous with its impressive large Almandine Garnet crystals. This mine is actually a Dana locality, and I would say these Almandines are arguably the best known Garnets from Colorado. This specimen is a rather good sized well-formed, dodecahedral crystal of Almandine Garnet a rich purplish-red hue. Associated semi-metallic greenish schist matrix can be seen here and there for a great touch. The display side is in great condition, with no major damage, but the backside of the piece is contacted / incomplete where it was removed from the pocket wall. A really impressive, eye-catching and highly displayable specimen of these old classic Garnets from Colorado. It's important to note that despite how widespread Garnet species are around the world, it's VERY difficult to find crystals this size of any species, as anything over a few cm is considered big, so these crystals are incredibly large for Garnet in general. Priced in the inventory at $1,200. From the collection of Gary Weaver of Prescott, Arizona (1944-2019). Gary was an electrical engineer who worked for many years for Hughes Aircraft in California. After retiring to Prescott, Arizona in the early 2000s, Gary rekindled his childhood love of minerals, amassing a collection of roughly 2000 specimens focusing on localities in which he and his wife had lived or visited (Mexico, Peru and the western / southwestern United States).
