Item Description

Alaska might not be known for a lot of mineral species, but one of the most iconic minerals and localities is Wrangell Island in far southeastern Alaska ! The famous Almandine Garnets from this locality are certainly well-known among collectors, and they seemed to have all but disappeared from the market in recent years. They are nearly as red as any species of Garnet gets, and they are often have very good sized crystals on the slivery-grey Biotite schist matrix. Piece features a pair of sharp, well-formed trapezohedral crystals with dodecahedral modifications is sitting neatly on the aforementioned schist. The largest Almandine measures 2.0 cm across, and they are both pretty sharp for the locality. They show a very deep wine red color when backlit. A beautiful display specimen of this famous material. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#570). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
