Item Description

An equant dodecahedron of lustrous and partially translucent, wine-red, almandine garnet, measuring 3 cm, is nestled aesthetically in a cleft in its schist matrix. This is classic material from Wrangell, once common back when I was growing up in the hobby but now seldom seen for sale on the market. This is a very remote mineral locality! It is from the collection of Doug Toland, one of the really well known field collectors who worked the Alaska localities for decades, and assembled a great collection of these hard to reach minerals. For what it is, it is an excellent specimen - about twice the mass of the usual Wrangell garnet you see, well situated and securely in the matrix so you know it is real and not repaired or placed in. This is a really great Alaska mineral classic!
