Item Description

A classic example of these wonderful Austrian Garnets featuring a handful of sharp, very well-formed, dark reddish-brown colored textbook dodecahedral crystals of Almandine measuring up to 4.3 cm across, sitting on silvery schist matrix. It's not common to find Garnet crystals this size from most world localities, and even when you do, they are often distorted and somewhat undesirable, but these crystals are remarkably smooth and distinct, which is significant in my mind. The largest Garnet does have an obvious contacted corner, but the piece can be displayed so it's not visible. Overall, a showy and three-dimensional piece of these wonderful old Austrian classics. From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-212138.html
