Item Description

One of the most iconic minerals and localities in far southeastern Alaska! These Almandine specimens are certainly well-known among collectors, and they seemed to have all but disappeared from the market in recent years. They are nearly as red as any species of Garnet gets, and they are often have very good sized crystals for any Garnet species. This specimen features a trapezohedral crystal with dodecahedral modifications sitting on schist matrix. The crystal is sharp and lustrous and shows gorgeous deep wine red color when backlit. A beautiful and displayable thumbnail of this famous material. This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The pieces come mounted in a "Perky" box from Wulff with a typed label on th base. A wonderfully historic and eye-catching piece of this well known material from at least a few decades ago.
