Item Description
Alexandrite is the color changing variety of Chryosberyl, and the very first Alexandrite crystals and gem came from Russia, and are still being mined today. The term "Alexandrite-type" color change is often used when a stone changes from a warmer hue i.e., pink to a cooler hue i.e., green or blue when expose to different light sources i.e., indoor lighting and sunlight. This color chage is extremely rare and is only exhibited in a few gems around the world. This "Round" cut stone exhibits a GREAT color change as it shifts from a beautiful bluish-green color in sunlight to a pinkish-purple hue in incandescent lighting. The gem shows a fantastic color change, and it was VERY difficult to photograph, but it is clearly evident when you expose it to different light sources. Top Alexandrite gems from modern localities can retail for over $2000 per carat, and the top Russian stones sell multi thousands of dollars per carat. You don't see these classic Russian stones on the market much these days, this gem IS from the type locality for this material, which makes it all the more desirable for any collector.
