Akermanite-Gehlenite series (rare) (ex Gerry Morvell Collection)

Item Description

This piece is labeled as Akermanite-Gehlenite, and actually comes with a print out of XRD analysis that confirms this identity. With that said, the piece is also labeled as coming from the N'Chwaning I Mine, and the only mine in Kalahari Manganese Field that I can find where Akermanite has been reported is the Wessels Mine, so it's safe to say there may be a mistake on the labelling on this one. We've decided to change it to Wessels Mine for this listing. It's important to note that this is the ONLY South African Akermanite-Gehlenite that we've had to offer in the auctions. In addition to the Akermanite there are small reddish-brown dodecahedral crystals of Andradite Garnet, along with slightly chatoyant pink Dolomite crystals and minor white fibrous crystals of what could be Bultfonteinite(?). There are also colorless, blocky Apophyllite (it's actually Hydroxyapophyllite-(K)) crystals measuring up to 1.2 cm as well. A rarity in terms of the species and the locality, and a cool piece to add to any South African mineral suite. From the collection of Gerry Morvell.
