Adamite var: Copper-bearing

A fine quality specimen of richly blue-green colored semi-spherical aggregates of Adamite (var: Copper-bearing) on matrix from the ancient Hilarion Mine in Lavrion, Greece. Lavrion is one of the important, historic old world mining localities, and the UNESCO website states, "The systematic exploitation of the mineral wealth of the area began during the transitional period from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (3200 BC). In the Bronze Age, the mines of Lavrion supplied the great civilizations of the Aegean (Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean) with silver, lead and copper". In this case of this specimen, it's amazing what a little bit copper can do, or maybe a decent amount of copper, as it has some of the strongest blue-green color you'll see for the species. The piece is best viewed up close, but you can still appreciate it in from a distance in a display case. The piece sits beautifully on its own without the aid of a base or clay, due to the fact that it's sawn on the bottom.
