Item Description

A classic example of the seldom-seen Actinolites from the famous Tilly Foster Mine in southern New York, near the Connecticut border. This locality was shut down over 100 years ago in 1897, so specimens are seldom seen on the market today. While this mine is best known for various species such as Chondrodite, Titanite, Antigorite and Magnetite, the Actinolites are less common, but still good quality. This piece is a good representation of this old classic material featuring several striated, prismatic crystals of a grey-green hue measuring up to 1.6 cm sitting on minor beige (Calcite?) matrix. Most of the Actinolites shows a bit of translucency when backlit, and in reflected light there is a bit of a "cat's eye" chatoyance that can be seen on the surface. If you're a fan of Tilly Foster material, this is a great example of these classic old-time pieces. Don't miss out. From the collection of Gerry Morvell (#GM1110A)
