Item Description

A smoker of a thumbnail of this well-known material. This piece is a fine quality and very well-formed specimen of this beloved silver sulfide from the historic St Andreasberg District in Germany, which closed over 100 years ago. A notably good-sized, sharp, well-formed, metallic, silvery-grey crystal group makes for a great overall specimen of this now hard to find material. Silver minerals from the Samson Mine are among the great classics from all European localities. Please note, sometimes these specimens are labeled as "Argentite" or pseudomorphs after Argentite, but this is not correct because Argentite cannot exist at our current atmospheric pressure below 177C, so all of these silver sulfide specimens are Acanthite. From an old East Coast collection, valued at $850.
