Schreibersite with Native Iron (var Kamacite) and Taenite in Meteorite (ex Josef Vajdak)

Item Description

A very hard to find piece from the well known Odessa Meteorite Craters near Odessa in westerns Texas. There are five craters in the group, including the second largest in the United States. I don't specifically which crater this piece came from. This piece is the features a sliced section of these well known and hard to find coarse octahedrite meteorites (which should not be confused with the Grossliebenthal meteorite that fell in 1881 over the Odessa Province of Ukraine) featuring somewhat spherical shaped brownish "blebs" of Schreibersite sitting on Kamacite, which is a variety of iron that contains nickel, and is the main component of typical octahedrite meteorites. Lastly, the label states that the rare nickel iron alloy Taenite is present on the specimen, which is actually found on naturally occuring on Earth in serpentine deposits, but it's also a typical component of iron meteorites. We don't sell a lot of meteorites in the auctions, but this one is special, not only because it's from Texas, but because it comes with a classic label from Josef Vajdak / Pequa Rare Minerals which really solidifies the identification.
