Item Description
Anthraxolite is an old synonym for pyrobitumen, a widespread hydrocarbon mineraloid of variable composition. It differs from asphalt by being brittle, infusible and relatively insoluble (MINDAT). Specimens are uncommon worldwide, with about the best coming from this famous Ontario district. Sudbury is a giant polymetallic deposit hosted within one of the Earth's largest impact craters (diameter 250 km) (MINDAT). This solid, lightweight specimen of pyrobitumen looks like layered euhedral galena crystals with very dark gray, highly lustrous crystals. Uncommon older material in this richness and quality.
